Cllr Carol Runciman, executive member for Education on City of York Council has welcomed news that a York centre that provides vocational training for pupils in the city is to receive a multi million pound boost in funding.
York's groundbreaking pupil support centre has recently moved from Cornlands Road to a new and better site at Fulford Cross School. The centre has been renamed Danesgate and are already enjoying their new premises and are planning to expand their work.
City of York Council has already invested funding in the move and heard recently that an award of £2.4 million has been made by the DfES to enable further investment to take place.
The young people who attend will have the opportunity to learn skills for their working lives in a realistic work related environment, which can now be developed on the site. There will be a thorough consultation with local residents throughout the process to ensure that any development will be sympathetic with the current local environment.
Cllr Runciman also welcomed the announcement of £800,000 government funding for New Earswick Primary School.
Cllr. Carol Runciman said:
"This is an excellent opportunity to expand our work with young people in training for their future working lives.
"We are already working closely with the colleges and training providers in the city who undertake work with our 14-16 year olds. We look forward to working with them to plan the best provision we can to start the training needed for future employment. This will give many young people a focus and a greater purpose to their future working lives.
"In addition we are delighted to receive funding for further work to New Earswick Primary School. As Councillor for Huntington and New Earswick I know the high standard of work that goes on in the school and their commitment to the community in which they are based. The funding will allow this work to develop further and I shall be watching how it progresses with interest."
