York repeats GCSE success

January 13, 2005 9:17 AM

GCSE results for York schools have been released today (13th January). York continues to perform significantly better than the national average both in terms of the number of pupils achieving grades A*-C and for those achieving grades A*-G .

Also released were 'value added' scores which measure the progress made by individual pupils throughout their school career. Whilst a number of York schools are individually rated very highly the overall results are a little disappointing when compared with outstanding performance in recent years.

Cllr. Carol Runciman, executive member for education on City of York Council said:

"These results show that York pupils still perform well above the national average at GCSE level. Their success is a tribute to their hard work and that of their teachers and other education staff."

"Obviously the value add results are slightly disappointing in comparison to last year's superb set of results but we will do everything we can to work towards the high standards we have previously set ourselves."
