Councillors at a meeting of City of York Council last night heard about the rapid improvement in street cleaning brought about by the city's liberal democrat administration.
In reply to a question at Tuesday night's Council Meeting regarding the cleanliness of York streets, Cllr. Charles Hall, Executive Member for Commercial Services, reported that the percentage of residents satisfied with the cleansing standard in 2002/2003 was 47%, in 2003/2004 was 60% and for 2004/2005 is now 65%. Cllr Hall added further that no complaints about the street cleaning service had been received over the Christmas period.
These figures were extracted from resident questionnaires carried out by the council in order to judge levels of satisfaction with a number of council services.
Cleaner streets are a priority for the lib dems who have included the service under the York Pride initiative, which seeks to improve the physical appearance of the city and which has been the party's flagship policy since winning power in 2003.
Cllr. Hall said:
" I am delighted with the standard that is now being achieved within the city and our thanks should go to the hardworking and dedicated team that clears away the litter deposited by visitors and residents day after day.
" Cleansing crews operated all days of the Christmas holiday apart from Boxing Day to ensure that the high standards they have achieved were maintained."
