York Council Leader Steve Galloway has welcomed the announcement that a 10 year franchise for GNER to operate the East Coast routes has been announced today.
"I am delighted that the company have been successful in retaining their franchise. It is a fitting reward for the improvements in service quality that they have achieved over the last few years.
As York provides the headquarters for the company, with many employees living - as well as working - in the City, it also provides a welcome boost to the stability of the local economy.
The Council will continue to work closely with the company to ensure that rail services from the City are to the highest standards and are backed by the necessary local infrastructure to ensure that travel is both quick and comfortable.
The Council will shortly be starting work on a remodeling of the York Station forecourt - a scheme which will see a major improvement in public transport interchange facilities.
We hope now to be able to involve GNER more fully in the proposals for the development of the York Central site".
