Andrew Waller, Lib Dem Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for York has labeled the statement by local government minister Nick Raynsford MP on council tax rises as 'window dressing' .
Andrew said "Mr Raynsford has tried to pretend, for the purposes of the forthcoming general election, that the council tax is fair, and can continue. There has been one-off extra funding for councils like York, which will unravel if they keep the same system. Moving to a Local Income Tax is the only fair way forward, especially for pensioners and people on low incomes."
The average council tax went up by £47, compared to York which was £48.60 (which receives more than £250 per person less than the average council in government grant). However, shortly properties in England will be revalued by the government. Based on the experience in Wales, one in three York residents could see their properties go into a higher band which would mean an automatic £124 a year increase for every band your house went up.
