Cllr Andrew Waller, Executive Member for Environment and Sustainability, has welcomed the partnership working between the council and the Dogs Trust which will enable the free or low cost micro chipping of dogs. The service is available free of charge to any York resident who receives any kind of benefit, this includes Family Allowance and Pension. If residents do not qualify for free micro chipping then the dog can still be chipped for a reduced fee of £9.50.
There is a similar scheme for neutering vouchers which are available to anyone over 18 who is on a "means tested" benefit.
This follows up the requirement for dogs to wear a collar showing the owners details. A microchip can be implanted just under the dog's skin as a back-up which can help re-unite dog and owner if the collar is missing.
Cllr Waller said, "I am delighted that the council and Dogs Trust are working together on this issue. This scheme should help to speed up the return of dogs that have gone missing in the city."
The council is also running a leafleting campaign to remind dog owners that dog fouling is a criminal offence, and that they can be fined up to £1,000.
