Possible York Council Tax rises of £124 for houses put into higher bands
Andrew Waller, Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for York has welcomed the election debate on how unfair the council tax system is in operation. A Local Income Tax would leave an average household income family on £22,000 paying £469 which is nearly half of what they are paying now. Importantly it would mean that pensioners who have incomes below the threshold for income tax would not pay the tax.
Andrew said "Whilst York does have the 10th lowest tax of 352 billing authorities in the country, people are still aware that their council tax has increased faster than their income. This has been largely due to the transfer of extra responsibilities from national to local government, and increased red tape. I believe that a local income tax would be fairer. The Lib Dems are being open and honest on this issue and on the website www.axethetax.org.uk people can see exactly what it would mean to them."
"After the General Election, the government will revalue houses for Council Tax bands. When this happened in Wales 1 in 3 houses went up at least one tax band. This year in York moving up one tax band would cost an additional £124 on top of the annual percentage increase."
