Cllr Andrew Waller Exec Member Environment and Sustainability has welcomed the success of the Acomb Shops Project. The project saw the Street Environment Service working together with local businesses, voluntary groups and the local community to improve the appearance of privately owned land in the area.
"This is a clear demonstration of what York Pride is about. By encouraging people, shops, and the council to work together at the same time we have given a face lift to the whole area. The Street Environment Officers who co-ordinated the project have learnt a lot from this pilot, and we have been able to test new powers given to councils to tackle anti-social behaviour and litter. Where land is a mix of public and private ownership there can be difficulties in getting things changed, and so I am keen that this experience be rolled out across the city".
"The York Business Pride pledges have helped enormously, and I am pleased that local businesses have contributed £17,400 to the project. There has also been massive volunteer input from "York Cares " into the area."
