York taxpayers will be left £60,000 out of pocket thanks to Tony Blair's new licensing system, it has been revealed.
The Government scheme will cost the Council £280,000, but only bring in £220,000 in fees - leaving the people of York to pick up the bill.
Cllr Steve Galloway (Liberal Democrat City of York Council Leader) said
"The changes to licensing hours were imposed by Blair's government. The police, health professionals, residents and councils right across the country were all against the changes. However, the government were determined to force this upon our communities."
"The government should repay councils for the expense of implementing Labour's plan. It is not fair that Council Taxpayers, who did not ask for extended drinking hours, should foot the bill for new laws designed to help large brewery chains to make more profits."
