Councillors and parents are celebrating after York won £22million for upgrades to the city's schools.
£13.5million will be used to rebuild Manor School. Another £8million will be available to fund improvements to secondary education in the West of the city. Wheldrake CE Primary School won £600,000
Cllr Carol Runciman, Executive Member for Education and Children's Services, said:
"This is excellent news for pupils, parents and staff. Subject to consultation, we could now expand Manor, a popular and thriving school, and we have the possibility of building a brand new school to accommodate students from both Oaklands and Lowfields. The money will ensure that all the schools involved will be fully accessible to those with disabilities, and are provided with the very latest equipment."
"Manor, Lowfields and Oaklands all demonstrated improvements through this year's GCSE results, and this money will allow us to build on the existing good practice.
"I am also very pleased that the bid for Wheldrake School, which was turned down last year, has now been successful as this small school is vital to the village community.
"I am delighted that our proposals have received backing from the government, and I look forward to consulting with parents and the schools, as we plan our way forward."
The projects will now be the subject of formal consultation with parents, staff and governors, to ensure community support and involvement. Previous consultation has taken place, but only on an informal basis as money had not been assured.
