Lib Dem Councillors to the South-East of York are today hopeful that the long-running saga of noise disturbance from Elvington Airfield may now be drawing to an end. Cllrs Ceredig Jamieson Ball, Janet Greenwood and Christian Vassie have all been supporting residents who are regularly disturbed by levels of noise coming from the airfield.
Elvington Airfield was recently served with a noise abatement order by the City of York Council's Environmental Protection team. The Airfield then appealed this order, which related to the sound of motor cars being raced at the site.
In court this week (6th Dec), Elvington Airfield announced that they were dropping most of their appeal. The Airfield will now go away and prepare details of noise control proposals. The proposals are likely to detail what type of events will be held and how often they will take place.
The Council will then consider the proposals, and consult with complainants and Parish Councils in nearby villages. Counter proposals will then be made, and any disagreement will be settled at a later court hearing.
The agreement made at that stage will form part of a noise abatement notice, and Elvington Airfield must stick to those terms or else they will be deemed to have committed an offence.
Speaking in response to the announcement, Cllr Ceredig Jamieson-Ball (Heslington ward) said "This is excellent news for all of those residents who have been disturbed by the Airfield. We are now much nearer to a solution, which should allow residents to enjoy their homes and gardens again. I hope that we will now see some peace restored in the villages affected."
Cllr Christian Vassie (Wheldrake ward) added, "We have had a long, long wait on this issue. I know that many people suffered great disturbance, and I would like to thank those residents who kept their own records of activities at the Airfield. I am delighted that the Airfield is now co-operating with the Council."
