A report, to be discussed at Wednesday's meeting of the Environment and Sustainability Panel, shows how successful City of York Council Trading Standards team have been at securing prosecutions against those who sell goods illegally.
Cllr Andrew Waller will hear details of Trading Standards prosecutions since the Council approved a new, tougher policy last year.
Between October and December 2005, four prosecutions were made relating to animal health, and one relating to food hygiene. A further seven prosecutions were made relating to Trading Standards offences, such as selling counterfeit DVDs or supplying fireworks to people under the age of 18.
A further 29 formal cautions were issued in this three month period, mostly for selling restricted products, such as alcohol or spray paints, to people below the age threshold.
Cllr Andrew Waller said "This record of action under the new, tougher Environmental Health Enforcement Policy sends a clear signal to all traders that we will be working to enforce the law. If you sell restricted products to underage people in York, you are likely to get caught.
"The message to all traders is to ask for proof of age before supplying products such as spray paints and alcohol. Also, to those people who are thinking of selling counterfeit goods should also be aware of our recent success in securing prosecutions.
"The Liberal Democrats were determined to use all available powers to tackle illegal sales and other environmental health offences, and I am pleased that we are establishing a record of effective action across York."
