Cllr Andrew Waller (City of York Council Executive Member for Environment and Sustainability) was impressed at recent results from the Council's 'Talkabout' panel survey, which included questions about York residents' views on Fairtrade.
The survey shows that a massive 82% respondents recognised the distinctive blue and green Fairtrade logo, or the term 'Fairtrade'. This is very impressive when compared with a survey carried out by the Fairtrade Foundation in 2005, which showed that 50% adults across the UK recognise the logo.
75% respondents in York said they bought Fairtrade products, with 19% stating they regularly buy goods marked with the logo.
78% respondents said they had 'no difficulties' finding Fairtrade products in York, which is a great testament to the growth of this sector.
Most importantly, 98% respondents support the concept of Fairtrade, and 79% stated they would buy these products again in the future.
Cllr Andrew Waller said "Councillors and officers were very pleased when York was awarded Fair Trade City status in 2003, as a result of the efforts made by York's Fair Trade Forum, a group of volunteers who have worked to raise the profile of these products. From these survey results, it would appear that the Forum has been very successful in reaching the people of York.
"The Council was keen to support Fairtrade through this local residents' opinion survey, and the results are extremely encouraging. I am delighted that residents are so aware of this sustainable and progressive shopping choice available to them."
During March, the first 'Fairtrade Festival' will take place in York, as part of the Council's 'City of Festivals'. The festival is organised by York Fair Trade Forum, and events will be taking place between 6th-19th March. For details of the events, visit www.communigate.co.uk/york/fairtradeyork
