Cllr Sue Galloway has expressed concern at Hugh Bayley's suggestion that healthcare should be rationed to overcome national NHS deficits.
Speaking in a debate in the House of Commons (20th March), York's MP Hugh Bayley said "we must engage with the rationing debate." This suggests that some treatments would have to be rationed across the country, because of the financial difficulties in some NHS trusts.
Speaking today, Cllr Sue Galloway (City of York Council Executive Member for Health & Social Services) said "I am really shocked that York's Labour MP thinks that vital healthcare for patients should be rationed. At a time when the government keeps banging on about how much money they are putting into the NHS, how can it be right that patients may face a reduction in availability of treatment?
"This government is constantly reorganizing our health service, and this, along with central targets, is costing an awful lot of taxpayers' money. MPs should be arguing for more freedom from government targets, not simply blaming NHS staff and accepting cuts in frontline services.
"I think Mr Bayley should explain very clearly to York residents who he thinks should be denied treatment under rationing."
