*Public liability claims fall further - saving council cash
Cllr. Ann Reid (City of York Council Executive Member for Planning and Transport) has welcomed this year's Annual Highways Maintenance Report, which shows increased efficiency and improved satisfaction amongst residents.
Cllr Reid said "Recent changes we have made in Highways are now bearing fruit. To see almost a third more maintenance work done for the same money, and increased satisfaction from residents, is a really positive outcome."
The report, which will be discussed by the Council's Executive on Tuesday 2nd May, details how the latest residents' opinion poll has satisfaction with highway maintenance up from 46% last year to 51%. Satisfaction with Footway maintenance is up from 46.5% to 51%.
Last year the Lib Dem Council changed the way basic road maintenance is carried out. Under the old system, the Highways Team ordered and paid for each piece of work separately, per square metre. Now, a team of road workers are paid to go out a tackle a whole area of the city on one go. This new approach has been very effective, with 30% more basic maintenance completed by the Council last year at no additional cost.
"This is a great example of efficiency from the Council. We have delivered more maintenance, but without costing more to the taxpayer. I would like to thank the staff involved in making this new approach a success," said Cllr Reid.
The Council has also saved money due to a further reduction in public liability claims relating to paths and roads. Over 90% of claims against the council are now 'repudiated', which is largely down to high standard safety inspections and speedy responsive works carried out by council workers.
Cllr Reid said "This report is very encouraging. I am especially delighted that residents' satisfaction is rising. I hope to see further improvements on York's highways, an area sadly neglected by Labour before 2003."
