New cardboard collections have helped residents smash the previous recycling record
Cllr Andrew Waller (City of York Council Executive Member for Environment and Sustainability) has welcomed the news that York residents achieved a recycling record last week, recycling a massive 628 tonnes of waste.
Residents recycled:
· 209 tonnes of paper, cans, glass, plastic and cardboard, up from around 140 tonnes per week at the same time last year (before the alternate weekly collection service started); and
· 419 tonnes of garden waste, the vast majority of which has been diverted from landfill waste.
If this were maintained for a year York residents would help to avoid £2million landfill penalties.
Cllr Waller said "I am grateful to residents for their enthusiastic support for recycling which is growing all the time. I am delighted that the council will be rolling out cardboard recycling to another 10,000 households soon, and this will be continued until all areas with green bins get cardboard recycling."

Comment on DEFRA Press Release
DEFRA have today issued a press release about minimum targets which would have seen York's target for 2007/08 lifted to 20%.
This has already been exceeded as York reached around 24% last year (this is due to be reported to members next month). This was with just three months of alternate weekly collection and the promise of more with a full year of alternate weekly collections.
The origin of the targets 12% (2003/4) and 18% (2005/6) were based on York's poor performance under Labour when it was only recycling 6% of its waste.
