Councillor Sue Galloway has reacted with anger at secret Government plans to hand over private NHS contracts worth £64 Billion to multinational companies without any consultation with residents, patients, unions, health professionals or local councils.
The plans only became public due to an error, as a commercial advert was placed a month before the policy was due to be announced by the government. Unions have reacted angrily to the news.
Cllr Sue Galloway (Lib Dem Executive Member for Adult Social Services) said "Any change from public to private provision of health care could have a hugely damaging impact on services which are jointly commissioned between the NHS and local authorities. Here in York, for example, the Council works with the Selby and York PCT to jointly commission and provide services for patients in both the mental health and learning disabilities fields.
"Labour have always claimed that the NHS was safe in their hands, but now we learn that they intend to sell off enormous contracts to multinational companies, without even the courtesy of consulting with patients and health care staff first.
"Such a huge change calls into question the future role of local authorities in providing social services."
