City of York Council is proposing to use a multi-million pound government grant to replace the city's Joseph Rowntree School with a brand new secondary school.
Cllr Carol Runciman (Executive Member for Children's Services) said "I am delighted that York has been selected to bid for funding to rebuild a secondary which is in poor condition. Last year, the Council completed a condition survey of all our schools, and we know that Joseph Rowntree is in the greatest need. The fact that the school currently achieves such good results in the existing building is testament to all of the staff, governors and students, and I am sure that a new building will enhance standards further.
"Since 2003 the Council has overseen enormous investment in the fabric of our schools, with four new primaries completed, two new school buildings planned for the West of York and countless other smaller projects around the city. I regret that the government has not given us more money to rebuild our schools, but I am delighted that we will be able to upgrade Joseph Rowntree Secondary School, to ensure a better environment for thousands of students in the future.
"The sustainability of all new school buildings is important to the Liberal Democrats. I am looking forward to working with the school and officers as plans develop."
