Cllr Andrew Waller has outlined his opposition to any new nuclear power stations.
Cllr Waller (City of York Council Executive Member for Neighbourhoods) said "I am hugely disappointed to see Blair's Energy Review surrendering before the power and wealth of the nuclear lobby. Renewables could deliver more than 50% of our current energy needs by 2025, avoiding the huge costs, pollution, health risks and security threats associated with nuclear.
"Electricity companies lose 40% of their power due to the long distances electricity is carried - locally generated power is the solution. The installation of more wind and solar devices in York could create enough power to ensure we don't need nuclear generated electricity here.
"Every person in the UK is already paying more than £1,500 to decommission Britain's old nuclear stations, and any new nuclear facilities will be a huge financial burden in 30 years time. We still haven't sorted out the problem of waste disposal, and there are real health concerns about living close to a nuclear facility.
"Nuclear will have to be hugely subsidised by the taxpayer, and every pound spent on nuclear is lost to clean technologies such as solar, wind or tidal.
"It is also hugely hypocritical to argue that other countries cannot have nuclear power because of the links to nuclear weapons, while Blair blindly commissions new reactors in Britain. Reserves of Uranium are limited - it is crazy to rely on these raw materials needed to make nuclear power."
