When the Liberal Democrats were elected in 2003, crime rates in York were rising steadily after 8 years of Labour rule. The Liberal Democrats took swift action and an effective partnership was formed between the Police and the Council. Crime levels started falling during that year and have continued to fall with a steep downward trend ever since.
Amongst the initiatives taken are extension of CCTV coverage, additional funding for security measures in local crime hotspots, alleygating schemes to make access more difficult for criminals and to limit escape routes, regular PCSO and Community Ranger patrols, along with better co-ordination between Council neighbourhood teams and Safer York partnership staff.
The result is that, under the Liberal Democrats, crime levels in 2006/7 are down 30% from their peak in 2003/4 and York has already achieved its 2008 crime reduction targets. And, after all these years, Labour is still obsessed with administration when it should have focused on street level action instead.
