The capital budget proposed by the ruling Liberal Democrat group of City of York Council makes a major financial commitment to enabling elderly and disabled residents remain in their own homes.
Over the next three years £615, 000 will be spent through the Disabled Facilities Grant and the Community Equipment Loans Store to enable more residents to have adaptations made to their homes or to have specialised equipment such as bath lifts or ceiling track hoists provided.
In addition there will be a major commitment over the next three years to advanced Telecare equipment (such as alarms and sensors in people's homes), with £225, 000 earmarked for the expansion of this project.
This commitment will enable people to live at home for longer thus reducing the need for admission to a hospital or nursing home.
Speaking today Cllr Sue Galloway, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Adult Social Services,
said, "Residents tell us that they wish to remain in their own homes for as long as they can. We want to make it easy for them to do so but the health and safety of those concerned must be paramount. There has been a huge increase in the number of people on our community lifeline system and, with the increasing number of older people living in York, we anticipate that this figure will grow."
