A major project to improve Clifton Bridge, costing £250, 000, has been approved by Liberal Democrats as part of their budget plans.
A recent routine inspection of the bridge showed that the parapets along the outside edge needed replacing and the opportunity is being taken to carry out a major refurbishment and improve cycle and pedestrian facilities at the same time.
Apart from a scheme in 1994 which carried out concrete repairs and protection, and waterproofed the deck, this is the first major work that has been carried out Clifton Bridge since it was built in 1963. The new scheme will provide parapets that comply with current standards and correct the deterioration of the bridge.
The project will entail moving the street lights to the outer edge of the bridge and this will allow the available space to be used more efficiently. It will then become possible to provide better facilities for cyclists using Clifton Bridge, where currently road conditions are difficult for all but the most confident cyclist. Improved street lighting will also mean greater safety for pedestrians and cyclists using this busy bridge. The lights will be installed to the latest sustainable standards and be dark sky compliant which should improve light levels but reduce environmental impact.
The Liberal Democrats have also allocated over £180, 000 to carry out principle bridge inspections across the City in order to identify defects and prioritise a programme of repair and maintenance.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for City Strategy, Cllr Ann Reid, said: "This project shows our commitment to improving facilities for cyclists by upgrading a facility that was built when traffic levels were significantly lower. It is also important that we spend money on maintaining the structural stability of the bridges in York. I am delighted we are undertaking this project, as it combines identifying structural problems, and our desire to improve cycling facilities. I hope it will make using the bridge easier for both drivers and cyclists."
