82% of York residents know what this means.
Cllr Andrew Waller, the City of York Council's representative on the York Fairtrade Forum, has welcomed the start of Fairtrade Fortnight in York from 25th February until 9th March.
Cllr Waller said,
"York became a Fair Trade City in 2004 and it has been great to see the support that residents and businesses have given. The council has supported the annual event, which is now part of the "City of Festivals" fixture programme. I proposed the motion to City of York Council in January 2004 which received all party support ,and was one of the key essentials to getting the Fairtrade Status for the city."
"Many of York's residents feel that it is important that individuals can make their own contribution to making trade fairer, and ensuring that producers get a better deal for their work. Every year there are more goods that are covered by Fair Trade and so more opportunities to make your mark. From local shops and cafes right though to major chains like Marks & Spencer and Tesco, retailers are realising that people are asking for Fairtrade. "
"Give it a try, and if you did not find a Fair Trade substitute for your usual coffee or tea in the past then give it a go now. There is a wider range for every taste."
"This is in no way contradictory to the view that British farmers should get a better deal from supermarkets, and in recent years in York there has been a strong link with Farmers Markets, and the themes of the Food and Drink Festival."
York residents are more aware of the Fairtrade logo than most, with 82% recognising the logo, and 75% of people purchasing Fairtrade products in York This is much higher than the national average of 57% and shows that York residents are particularly aware.
