The bid for £21 million from York to the Regional Transport Board (RTB) funding for three new Park and Ride sites and the Yorcard regional public transport smartcard has been successful.
The council will contribute an additional £3m from the Local Transport Plan.
York Council Leader Steve Galloway, who participated in the Regional Transport Board meeting which was held today in Leeds, said,
" I am very pleased that we have got these key congestion busting schemes over this hurdle. Unless queried by the DfT (Department for Transport), they will now definitely go ahead and York Council officers will be giving them a high priority to make sure that they are delivered as quickly as possible".
A decision on another scheme which affects York - the Hopgrove roundabout improvement on the A64 - was deferred, together with several other schemes, until the July meeting of the RTB.
"There was a lot of support for the Hopgrove proposal from Board members but they wanted to see a fresh comparison of its benefits when compared to other schemes. Although the budget as been fully committed by the Board it is likely that, in July, they will agree to further over-programming which could allow schemes like Hopgrove to move to the next stage in the process".
The Highways Agency have promised an early start on the Hopgrove scheme when it has received Board and Ministerial approval.
