Cllr Carol Runciman and New Earswick pupils
Schools across York have been holding a series of events this week to promote Healthy Schools Week. They have been making sure that children understand how to keep fit and healthy by a variety of activities and events.
Cllr Carol Runciman, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Children's Services, visited New Earswick Primary School, where she is a school Governor, to see their programme and encourage children taking part in the sponsored skip. She found them all busy outside in the sunshine, practising their skipping skills and raising funds to support such events as school trips and outings.
Cllr Runciman said, "I was most impressed with all the activities. The children were enjoying the skipping as well as a fruit tuck shop and some gardening at the front of the school - all designed to get them active in the fresh air. They have already done some work on sun protection and later this week, they will have a swimming gala at the nearby New Earswick Swimming Pool. All this will help to emphasise how important healthy eating and an active lifestyle really are. The children were having a great time and learning a lot as well, and I know that all York's children will benefit from the work that they do in Healthy Schools Week."
