York Liberal Democrats are celebrating the city increasing its recycling rate to 43.3%. This excellent recycling rate beats the council's 2007/8 target, and even exceeds the 2008/9 national target of 40%.
This year's Residents' Opinion Survey shows that 77% of residents are either very or fairly satisfied with their recycling services. 85% are very or fairly satisfied with their local tip and household waste recycling centres and 74% are very or fairly satisfied with door recycling collections.
Cllr Ann Reid, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, said,
"I would like to thank residents for ensuring that we have increased recycling to 43% when five years ago it was only 12%. Our objective is to continue to increase this figure by the roll out of recycling collections to all of York's properties. However, the Government is working against councils by using Landfill Tax as a stealth tax, and this year they are taking an additional £1/2 million of council tax payers' money which could be used to roll out recycling collections to apartments, terraced houses and rural areas."
The Council's performance rate of 43.3% for household recycling is being reported to the Neighbourhood Services Advisory Panel on 5th June.
