Cllr Carol Runciman at the launch of 95 Alive
Liberal Democrat Cllr Carol Runciman, Deputy Leader of York Council, yesterday attended the launch of the York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership, '95 Alive', summer campaign.
'95 Alive' aims to encourage safer driving by asking groups who are celebrating summer with visits to barbeques and other events to name a 'Designated Driver' who does not drink any alcohol at all. Some establishments will now offer free non alcoholic drinks to designated drivers to encourage these arrangements and reduce accidents on the road.
Cllr Runciman said, "Everyone needs to be aware that drinking and driving are a dangerous mixture. There are many incidents on our roads each year that change people's lives forever and from which they never recover. Not only are drivers killed and injured but their friends and families are hugely affected too.
"I urge everyone to take the '95 Alive' campaign seriously and to make sure they have a 'Designated Driver' when they go out on the roads."

'95 Alive' is a multi-agency Road Safety Partnership formed in November 2004 to try to reduce the number of deaths on the roads in York and North Yorkshire, and adopted government targets to address this.
It aims to make the roads in York and North Yorkshire safer by the end of 2010. One in three lives will be saved and 95 people will be alive that otherwise may have been killed on our roads.
The partners of 95 Alive include
· crime and disorder reduction partnerships (CDRPs);
· primary care trusts (PCTs);
· Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber;
· Highways Agency;
· North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Parks;
· North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue;
