Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Children and Young People, Councillor Carol Runciman, has backed national Liberal Democrat plans for reforming our schools system.
The Liberal Democrats are proposing to give schools greater freedoms by
- Scrapping SATs for 7 and 14 year olds
- Abolishing the national curriculum and replacing it with a shorter guidance document which will allow schools greater freedom in determining their own teaching programmes, bringing greater diversity in the educational curriculum
- Establishing an independent Education Standards Authority to oversee standards in schools, which will work closely with local authorities and local councillors
- Cutting control of schools from Whitehall and reducing the size of the central government department by half
Cllr Runciman said, "I am fully supportive of these new Liberal Democrat plans to reform our national education system. These changes would put an end to excessive testing of pupils in our schools, which can often lead to problems for children and parents, and which wastes millions of pounds. We would invest this money in one-to-one reading and numeracy tuition for children, which can significantly improve results and confidence."
"It is also important that we give schools greater freedom from endless directives from central government, so they can concentrate on delivering teaching that is best suited to the needs of their pupils."
