Liberal Democrat Councillors for Fulford and Heslington are taking part in a Youth Involvement Day for young people in their wards, next Tuesday, 1st July. The day is being run by City of York Council and the Heslington and Fulford Ward Committee team, and will be held at Fulford School.
The event is intended to involve and engage people in shaping the services of the city. Young people in Year 10 at Fulford School will be taking an active role in the planning, delivery and design of services for the local area, and focusing on the four ambition statements for the ward: safer roads for all, keeping you safe, improving your local environment and people matter.
The day will involve 8 classes rotating around 7 different workshops. These will cover waste and street environment services, anti-social behaviour, road safety, the role of ward councillors, the Ward Committee and its budget, and the YorOk website.
At the end of the day there will also be a 'Question Time' session in which the panel - made up of ward councillors, a parish councillor, a street environment officer, a police officer and a representative from the Council's Learning, Culture and Children's Services - will answer questions from young people about services in their ward and across York.
Fulford Councillor, Keith Aspden, said: "The Ward Committee wanted to work with young people to improve the local area in Fulford and Heslington, and to find out if our priorities are up to date. I'm looking forward to hearing the views and ideas of young people living in Fulford and Heslington to decide how to spend our Ward Committee budget so we can improve services affecting young people."
Heslington Councillor, Ceredig Jamieson-Ball, added: "The ideas that we take from Tuesday will not only help us as local councillors, they will also help the Council to work out services for young people in the city as a whole. I am really looking forward to talking to young people about the role of the ward team, as its great to get young people involved in local decision making."
