Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Housing and Adult Social Services, Cllr Sue Galloway, is welcoming the launch of a new 'Changing Place' in Walmgate next week, and will be attending its opening on Monday.
The 'Changing Place' is a toilet and changing facility for people with disabilities, and initially it will be used exclusively by people accessing community-based day services.
The 'Changing Place' is a lot more spacious than a standard disabled toilet, and includes not just specially designed toilet and washing facilities, as well as a changing bed, but also a dining room and kitchen area to be used at lunchtimes by people accessing community-based day services.
Cllr Sue Galloway said, "York can be proud of leading the way in providing these facilities for the disabled. This shows our commitment to modernising the services we provide for people with disabilities, and meeting their specific needs, allowing them to lead more independent lives and go out and do things in the city centre without difficulty."
She said: "I had wanted to introduced changing facilities for people with disabilities in York for some time, and was very pleased when we opened the first 'Changing Place' facility at Acomb Library in February. We will be establishing two more 'Changing Places' in the city in the coming months, and the new city centre toilets in Silver Street will also include a 'Changing Place'."
