Liberal Democrat Councillors for Dringhouses and Woodthorpe have welcomed the significant improvement works that are being undertaken at the Hob Moor underpass. .
Works started at the beginning of the month to improve the underpass by installing drains and lighting, painting the tunnel walls white and applying a new type of anti graffiti finish. Following requests from residents a chicane has also been installed to reduce the speed of cyclists approaching from the Tadcaster Road end of the route.
Cllr Ann Reid, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Dringhouses and Woodthorpe, said:
"We have received frequent complaints about the state of the underpass, which is well used by both pedestrians and cyclists. One of the problems has been the water that drains through from the railway track above and leads to flooding in the tunnel. New drainage channels should improve the situation and keep the tunnel passable at all times."
Cllr Tom Holvey, who chairs the Ward Committee said:
"I am pleased that we have been able to use Ward Committee funding as well as some of the ward's allocation of York Pride money towards these improvements. Added this to money from the Council's maintenance and street lighting budgets has made it possible to carry out all the necessary work at the same time"
Cllr Sue Sunderland also welcomed the improvements:
"I know that closing the tunnel for 2 weeks has been inconvenient for some residents but I hope that cyclists and pedestrians who use the underpass agree that the changes, once they are complete, will make the underpass better lit, cleaner and safer"
