Councillor Christian Vassie, executive member for Leisure, Culture, and Social Inclusion, today welcomed the news that the York City Archives have received funding to explore the impact of the Cold War in York.
'I only recently learned that York has its own nuclear bunker' said Cllr Vassie. 'I am sure pupils and students in York will benefit from being able to learn how a global political situation, such as the Cold War, impacted directly on the lives of York residents.'
'In our own age we have global issues affecting our lives here in York, whether it be Climate Change, the threat of terrorist attack, or the security of our fuel supplies. A better understanding of how previous generations have responded to earlier threats, where they got it right and where they got it wrong, can only help us prepare for the challenges we face now and in the future.'
