Galtres Avenue and Ashley Park Crescent in Heworth Without are set to become Cold Calling Zones by the end of this month.
Cold Calling Zones aim to prevent 'doorstop crime', particularly that associated with cold calling such as distraction burglary. Residents within a designated zone agree that they do not wish to deal with cold callers, and can report anyone breaching their wishes to trading standards or the police. Signs are put in place to warn uninvited callers that they are not welcome in the area.
Residents requested a new Cold Calling Zone in Ashley Park Crescent through a survey undertaken by the Council and PCSOs as part of the Council's community safety campaign, 'Feeling and Being Safe in York', launched last month. The 3-month campaign will tackle issues of personal safety, property safety and fear of crime, as well as stepping up enforcement activity. The new Cold Calling Zone in Galtres Way has been requested through a postal survey of local residents.
A very positive response for a Cold Calling Zone was given from both areas, and the Cold Calling Zones will be launched on 28th August when signs will be put on lampposts and information packs sent to all residents in the zones.
Cllr Nigel Ayre, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Heworth Without, said, "Cold Calling Zones have been very successful throughout York, and I am pleased that the Feeling and Being Safe campaign has had success in my ward by bringing about a new Cold Calling Zone. I am sure both zones will help ensure that residents feel safe in their homes, and that they can deal with cold callers effectively."
