The introduction of the smoking ban has resulted in 100% no-smoking in public places in York.
The smoking ban became effective on 1st July 2007 and a report to be discussed by Councillors next week shows that City of York Council has successfully introduced the new legislation in a smooth and trouble free way.
A survey of York premises undertaken during April and May of 67 randomly chosen premises showed the compliance rate for smoke free signage was 95% and the compliance rate for no smoking was 100%.
York Council was given a one-off grant of £93, 756 by the Department of Health to help implement the new legislation. Part of this money was used to employ two temporary smoke free enforcement officers to raise awareness and understanding of the legislation. They visited 735 premises in York prior to the ban and made further visits to nearly 2,000 premises after the ban was introduced. The Council has also worked with the PCT to implement the ban.
Enforcement applies to pubs, cafés, restaurants, taxis, public transport, bus shelters, railway stations and other public places.
Cllr Ann Reid, Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, said, "I would like to thank the Council staff responsible for implementing this new law so effectively, and all the landlords of pubs and managers of restaurants and other establishments who have cooperated with the Council to successful implement the ban."
