Cllr Ayre at the site of the problems
Liberal Democrat Councillor for Heworth Without, Nigel Ayre, has announced that progress has finally been made in the 40 year long saga of Lawn Way which, from number 14 onwards, has never been under the Council's control.
Residents have called repeatedly over the years for the Council to adopt it, as this will mean the pavement, road and street lights will be included in the council's maintenance programme when necessary. However, this has not been possible due to a long-standing problem which has not allowed the Council to adopt Lawn Way - the Council cannot adopt a road unless its pumping station (if it has one) and drains are up to standard.
Yorkshire Water was not happy that the pumping station which services Lawn Way met all its requirements, but works to rectify the problems with the pumping station have now been agreed between Persimmons Homes and Yorkshire Water, and this will remove the barriers that have prevented the Council from adopting Lawn Way.
Cllr Ayre said, "This is fantastic news. Local residents know that this situation has been allowed to continue for far too long. I was determined to try and deliver progress for residents in the area through working closely with council officers. I am pleased that this has led to agreement between Persimmons and Yorkshire Water and we can now moved forward. At this stage, we don't know when Lawn Way will be adopted, but it is now looking very likely, and this is great news for local residents."
