A wind turbine will be erected at York's EcoDepot this weekend to improve further the building's energy savings by generating more renewable energy on site.
The wind turbine is expected to supply the building with 10 per cent of its annual electricity consumption, making a saving of about 18, 000 kg of CO2 emissions each year. The turbine is a 15 kW Proven wind turbine on a 15 metre mast. The estimated annual output is 42,000 kWh.
The EcoDepot is already generating about 46,000 kWh of electricity from our Photo Voltaic Panels (solar panels on the roof), making a saving of about 19,000 kg of CO2 each year.
Cllr Christian Vassie, the Council's Energy Champion, said: "I am delighted that we are adding another feature to the Eco Depot to help tackle climate change. The wind turbine is the final feature included in the original plans for the EcoDepot and will join the biomass boiler, straw insulation and solar panels - all of which reduce the building's energy consumption. This Liberal Democrat administration continues to show leadership on tackling climate change. "
Cllr Ann Reid, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, added: "The wind turbine will be a massive resource for the EcoDepot, supplying 10 per cent of its electricity consumption, and it is therefore a welcome addition."
The wind turbine is due to be installed at the EcoDepot this Saturday 6th September at 4pm, and Council Leader Andrew Waller will be attending.
