Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Housing and Adult Social Services, Cllr Sue Galloway, has announced that a £10,000 fund will be made available to voluntary sector organisations to promote independence and well being.
The fund will be introduced in April 2009, and voluntary organisations will be able to apply for funding at any point during the financial year, using a simplified application system. The budget is aimed at smaller voluntary organisations who often struggle to get an activity off the ground through lack of funding. They will be able to apply for a one off payment of up to £1000 to support local community initiatives aimed at promoting the independence and well being of the local community.
Speaking today, Sue Galloway said "It is important that older people especially keep fit and active. Tackling social isolation is important and by setting up this fund I hope that it will encourage small groups of people to set up new projects. These activities can be anything from a crossword club to a day club or, as has happened elsewhere in the country, older people helping to administer a toe nail clipping service."
The new grants are intended for organisations which provide services for older people and people with physical or sensory impairments, learning difficulties and mental health problems, as well as organisations which address housing needs in York.
