On Thursday, 6th November, David Laws MP - the Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families - is coming to York to look at some of the city's good practice in education services. Cllr Carol Runciman, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services, will be making some visits around York with David Laws MP.
He will be visiting New Earswick Children's Centre and the newly opened 'Explore' Library Learning Centre, before going to New Earswick Primary School where he will be meeting with the School Council, and at lunch time having a healthy school meal.
In the afternoon, David Laws will visit Hob Moor Oaks School (which provides special education for pupils with learning difficulties and/or disabilities) and Hob Moor Community Primary School. The two schools already share the same site, and a recent consultation came out in favour of federating these two schools, which will be the first federation between a mainstream primary and a special school in the country.
David Laws is the Liberal Democrat MP for Yeovil as well as Lib Dem spokesperson for Children, Schools and Families. He joined the Liberal Democrats in 1984 and has been in the Liberal Democrat shadow cabinet for the last 6 years, becoming Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families in 2007.
Cllr Runciman said, "I am looking forward to welcoming David Laws to York on Thursday. I already know David from working with him before, but it will be great to show him some of the innovative things we are doing here in York, such as the federation at Hob Moor and the new Explore Library in New Earswick. He has particularly asked to see some of the new and interesting projects we are taking forward at the moment."
