Liberal Democrat Fulford Councillor Keith Aspden has expressed concern following consultation about the impact of proposed changes to the Fulford Road corridor in the Hospital Fields to Heslington Lane area.
While supporting the aim of improving the roads for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists, Councillor Aspden expressed concern that the plans would unnecessarily reduce parking for residents and businesses in some areas.
The plans include on and off road cycle lanes to the east of Main Street, strips of bus lanes, a new bus shelter and cycle lanes at the Heslington Lane junction with Main Street.
Commenting as a public consultation on the plans drew to a close, Councillor Aspden said, "The provision of both on-road and off-road cycle tracks running parallel for a significant section of the road to the east of Main Street is un-necessary, it will remove important parking provision for residents, local businesses and the local church, St. Oswald's."
"I will be objecting to the Traffic Order on behalf of local residents, and calling for just the off-road cycle track to be implemented. This would still improve facilities for cyclists and retain council resources, but ensure there is still sufficient parking for local people."
"It is important that we encourage people to cycle and use public transport but it is also import that we implement these ideas sensibly to reduce the negative impact on local people."
