Liberal Democrat Councillor Christian Vassie, who represents Wheldrake Ward, has confirmed that the Friday evening number 18 bus service to Wheldrake and on to North Duffield is not to be cancelled.
There had been concerns that the bus service would be lost when the agreement with First York expired. However another bus company will now be providing the service when the arrangement with First York terminates.
Councillor Vassie welcomed the news saying, "I am glad we have been able to find a solution to save this bus service. Both I and the council are aware that this service has proved very popular with residents. For young people especially, this bus service provides a lifeline, allowing independent access to the city once a week. Many other residents also take advantage of the opportunity to go into town, to watch a film or to go out for a meal."
"We are cautiously optimistic that once the new bus operator has seen how well patronised the Friday evening service is, we may be able to persuade them to extend the service to include Saturday nights."
"I know many residents are keen to be able to see a Saturday evening service. It make sense for those who do not have cars but it also attractive to those who want to be able to go into town and have a drink without worrying about driving home. Residents elsewhere across the city have this option and so should village residents."
