York's children and young people will have be able to learn how to repair and maintain their bikes thanks to 'Save My Bike Day' which takes place in Tower Gardens on Saturday 13 June.
During the course of the day, children and their parents will be able to attend a series of themed workshops run by local bike shop mechanics which will help them learn the skills they need to ensure their bikes are in good working order.
The Cycling City York team will also be at the event, handing out information and advice, as well as words of encouragement to get more people on their bikes.
The event is being organised by green transport charity Sustrans, one of the partners in the Cycling City York project that will see £3.68 million invested in York's cycle network.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services, Councillor Carol Runciman said the workshops would teach young people useful new skills. She said, "It is important that we do everything we can to encourage young people to cycle more both to improve their overall health and fitness and to get them into the habit of using more sustainable modes of transport."
"Teaching young people how to maintain their own bikes will help to boost their enthusiasm for cycling as well as providing them with practical skills for the future."
Admission to 'Save My Bike Day' is free but children are asked to register beforehand by completing a form that they will have been given by their schools.
