WESTFIELD OLDER PEOPLE'S HEALTH AFTERNOON

June 30, 2009 12:00 AM

Westfield Ward Committee is holding an Older People's Health Afternoon next month to give residents tips on staying healthy this summer.

Falls by elderly people account for a very large number of hospital admissions each year and Westfield residents will be able to exchange their old slippers for a new pair and get advice from the Falls Prevention Service about how to avoid trips and slips.

The free event will give residents the chance to get help and information on a range of health topics including having their blood pressure checked and simple advice about hearing and dental services. There will also be the opportunity to join in some simple exercises aimed at keeping fit and mobile. There will also be information on Warden Call and Telecare services as well as staff on hand to help people check their benefit entitlements.

Representatives from OCAY, the Alzheimer's Society, Age Concern and the Older People's Assembly will also be attending the event to showcase the services they have to offer older residents.

Members of the local Neighbourhood Policing Team will also be attending the event to meet with local people and discuss any issues that people want to raise.

There will also be the opportunity for residents to learn about some of the work that is being done by residents in the Kingsway West and Foxwood areas as part of the Kingsway West Area Action Project.

There will be a craft exhibition from residents of Windsor House and outside the library Yorkshire Museum will be giving a demonstration on how Romans cooked food.

Liberal Democrat Westfield Ward Councillor Sue Galloway will be at the event with fellow Ward Councillors Andrew Waller and Steve Galloway. She urged local residents to attend the event, saying, "There will be a great deal of very useful information on offer for people, all aimed at improving their health and wellbeing."

"There is a lot of support out there for local people and hopefully this event will help to make people more aware of what the Council and other agencies have to offer them."

The event is being held at Acomb Explore Library on Wednesday 1st July from 1pm to 4pm
