Liberal Democrat Councillor Richard Moore has claimed victory in a battle to stop the Tesco store at Clifton Moor from being licensed to sell alcohol 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Councillor Moore held talks with the manager of the store to discuss the application after fears were raised about the impact of the store being licensed to sell alcohol 24/7.
Councillor Moore said the meeting had been very constructive. He said, "The main reason behind the application for extended sale of alcohol was to match up alcohol sales after 4pm on a Sunday with other products sold in store."
"Under Sunday trading laws people entering the store at 4pm have half an hour to finish their shopping. However the store only has an alcohol licence until 4pm, so anyone in the store after that time cannot purchase any alcohol."
"Following our meeting the application has been reduced to extended opening to midnight on Saturday, 4.30pm on Sunday and opening at 6am on a Monday."
"The application for a 24/7 licence to get around the small issue with the Sunday trading laws was excessive. I am glad that Tesco have now decided to amend their application to what is a much more sensible proposal."
"I would like to thank the store manager for taking into account the concerns of residents and acting accordingly."
