Commenting on the news that the number of people claiming job seekers allowance in York fell last month Liberal Democrat Leader of the Council, Councillor Andrew Waller said:
"This is a positive sign, but I am not convinced that it is 'green shoots' of a full recovery. York is in a strong position, however, there are some sectors in the economy where jobs are still in the balance, and we need to do all that we can to help keep them."
"I have been in regular contact with businesses in the city, and I am grateful for the way in which everyone is willing to pitch in together to pull the city through."
The Total Job Seekers Allowance figure for June 2009 was 3654, 2.9% of the working population. This a decrease of 88 from the previous month's figure of 3742.
Nationally the figure rose by 23,000 to 1.56 million.
