Young people in Elvington will be the first to benefit from a £1m investment in new play areas in the city when a new play area opens this week.
The new play area located in the playing field off Elvington Lane was funded jointly by City of York Council and Elvington Parish Council in partnership with Lower Derwent Sports and Social Club, who own the land.
The play area is the first of 22 new facilities to be built using £1m of funding allocated to the city through the Playbuilder Scheme.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Social Inclusion, Councillor Nigel Ayre said the new play area would provide young people with much needed new facilities.
He said, "The Playbuilder scheme is aimed at providing more open access play facilities for young people aged 8 to 13. Thanks to a partnership with Elvington Parish Council this new play area goes beyond that to provide facilities for under 8s as well."
"The money has been targeted to places where facilities were in short supply, I hope that these fantastic new facilities will make a big difference to young people in Elvington."
"I am sure the young people of Elvington will make full use of these facilities over the summer holidays and I look forward to seeing more play areas opening soon with the help of this scheme."
"There are a further 21 projects funded by Playbuilder which, once completed, will provide the city's children and young people with some fantastic new places to get outside and really enjoy themselves."
