Fulford's Liberal Democrat Councillor, Keith Aspden has today welcomed the news that Dobbies Garden Centres have withdrawn their appeal against the refusal of planning permission for a new garden centre on green belt land in Fulford.
Dobbies were contesting the refusal of planning permission for a garden centre on land lying to the southeast of York Designer Outlet in Fulford, but in a letter from the Planning Inspectorate today it was confirmed that the planning inquiry set for September was cancelled as the appeal had been withdrawn.
Councillor Aspden said, "Throughout the process of the planning application I raised concerns by local residents and the Parish Council, particularly with regard to the harm that this development would have done to the Green Belt and countryside of this part of York."
"The proposed development would have taken away the original green setting to the Naburn Hospital that was largely retained when the Designer Outlet was constructed and would have destroyed a valued old orchard."
"In their application Dobbies tried to convey an image of a sustainable garden centre. However, for the Dobbies garden centre to be a sustainable, I think that the first condition should be to build on brown field land."
