The number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance in York rose slightly during July. The figure rose by 76 to 3730, 3% of the working age population.
The rise follows the news in June that York had seen it's first fall in the number of people claiming JSA since June 2008.
Unemployment in York remains low compared other local authorities in the region and sits below the National Average of 4.1%.
Liberal Democrat Leader of the Council, Councillor Andrew Waller said, "We were right to say that the reduction for June, whilst being welcome, was not the signal for the end of the recession. It does mean that it is vital for the Council and business community, Chamber of Commerce continue working together to support existing jobs, and fight to bring new ones to the city."
"Whilst York's figures are low in the region, it does mean that it is even more important to bring developments like Terry's online to deliver employment opportunities."
"I will continue to press for banks, particularly the nationalised ones, to lend to companies who are able to expand in the city to create jobs. I will also respond to government policy which impacts on rail, and other jobs in York such as the East Coast franchise, and infrastructure companies."
