City of York Council has been praised for it's value for money services in a new report by the Audit Commission.
The commission's report graded the Council's use of resources in the financial year 2008/09 and assessed the authority as performing adequately.
The report praised council's provision of value for money services, its risk management arrangements as well as elements of its commissioning of
services.
The assessment is the first time that the Council has been assessed under the new Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA) which assesses how well local councils and their partnerships are performing.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Corporate Services, Councillor Richard Moore said, "The new CAA assessment system is quite different to the system used in previous years."
"The differences in the system mean comparisons between the rating in this report and previous years are difficult but the comments in the report are broadly very encouraging."
"It may take a few rounds of CAA assessment before the ratings settle down to give a true comparison."
"The council has been judged to be providing value for money services, something which will improve even further as the More for York efficiency programme takes effect."
"York receives a lower government grant per head than most other local authorities, yet we are still able to provide excellent services while maintaining the lowest council tax levels in Yorkshire."
