This week York will be celebrating the achievements of the athletes who represented the Yorkshire and Humber at this year's GB Special Olympics.
A celebration event will be held at New Earswick Indoor Bowls Club on Friday 2nd October where the athletes and guests will be able to watch footage of the competition and celebrate their success.
The Special Olympics City of York team returned from the event, which was held in Leicester in July, with 19 medals including 5 gold.
On their return they took part in an open top bus tour of the city to show off their medals and celebrate their success.
Along with celebrating the success of the athletes. the event this week will provide an opportunity to recognise the hard work and dedication of the organising committee, coaches and volunteers who helped to make the team such a success.
Liberal Demcorat Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Social Inclusion, Councillor Nigel Ayre will be attending the celebration. He said, "I am looking forward to meeting all the people who took part and celebrating their fantastic achievements."
"To come back from the games with so many medals is a fantastic reward for all their hard work and training. The coaches who put so much of their time into helping our athletes achieve their potential also deserve great credit."
"I hope that the success of the team this year will inspire more people to join the Special Olympics team so that this success can be repeated in four years time."
