People wanting to save money and cut down on their food waste had the opportunity to learn how to make the most of their leftovers as part of York Food and Drink Festival last week.
During the festival, which ran from the 18th to 22nd of September, Chef Ash Metcalfe ran a series of demonstrations on how to cook a wide range of fantastic meals using leftover food.
The demonstrations were supported by York and North Yorkshire Waste partnership's 'Love Food Hate Waste' campaign, which aims to reduce the amount of edible food that people throw away.
Visitors were challenged to guess how much pasta or rice they would need for a family meal and were given tips on safely reusing food.
Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, Councillor Ann Reid said making the most of food leftovers would have both economic and environmental benefits.
She said, "The amount of food we throw away is staggering and has a negative impact both on the environment and on our finances. By making the most of food we can divert waste away from landfill and make sure we get the most value out of our weekly shop."
"I am sure that people picked up some valuable cooking tips from these demonstrations as well as hopefully being inspired to make the most of food they might normally throw away."
